I'm going to analyse "The Purge" poster to use it as a case study for my future exams. I will start by talking about Mark of quality, which has been used on this poster as the references to an other successful film(Paranormal activity and Sinister) were made. By showing a mark of quality, the audience is convinced that the film would be a quality product as previous films produced. The film title is combined with the image and the tag-line to give the audience certain expectations of the film. It has been written using a white colour, to make it stand out from the poster. Suspense is created as the audience would want to find out what is going to happen in the film. The release date is in bold to let the audience know when exactly the film is going to be available to watch. People would be more excited to watch it because they've been waiting for the release date, which built anticipation. The colour black is dominant to create a sense of mistery. Ou...

Vladimir Propp suggested that every narrative has eight different character types. The hero — the character who reacts to the dispatcher and donor characters, thwarts the villain, resolves any lacking or wrong hoods and weds the princess. The villain — an evil character that creates struggles for the hero. The dispatcher — any character who illustrates the need for the hero's quest and sends the hero off.  The helper — a typically magical entity that comes to help the hero in their quest. The princess or prize, and often her father — the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her as a consequence of some evil or injustice, perhaps the work of the villain. The hero's journey is often ended when he marries the princess, which constitutes the villain's defeat. The donor — a character that prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object, sometimes after testing them. The false hero — a figure who takes credit for the hero's acti...

Claude Levi Strauss is that the conflict is based around the binary opposites and that the binary opposites are the central climax of narrative structure. A film that could be used as an example to supports Strauss's theory is "The Guvnor". In this case, the binary opposite is : Young vs Old. Mitch, the ex-leader of a London firm known as The Guvnors that has walked away from his life of violence and more than 20 years later is happily married. He becomes concerned when his son starts to show violent tendencies through his behavior at school. He is challenged by Shanko, a local gangster, after Shanko learns of the reputation of The Guvnors. Shanko is then humiliated at the hands of another former Guvnor, Mickey. This leads to brutal retaliation and a reuniting of The Guvnors, which reignites gangland warfare spanning two generations of families.

Tzvetan Todorov' s narrative theory suggests that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium,where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution when equilibrium is restored. A film that could be used to supports Todorov's theory is "The Hangover". 1st stage-Equilibrium: One of the main character is supposed to get married, as his friends decided to go to Las Vegas just two days before. 2nd stage- Disruption: The group is drugged and wake up the next morning not knowing what happened the night before, and also the main character(The one who is meant to get married) is missing. Genre : Action/Crime Themes: Betrayal/Revenge Plot: 45 years old family guy who happens to be the most famous cop in the city decides to take revenge on the guy who brutally brakes its dream life by killing his wife and make it seems like the cop's son did, when getting to his house during the night. The guy who broke in, happens to be his son's ex-best friend who tries to take revenge as the cop's son betray him by getting him into trouble and get him arrested for about 10 years. The main character decides to build up a second life, becoming a cold-blooded, half crazy person whose eyes are blinded by the fire of revenge as his son gets arrested for life as he gets accused of killing his own mother. Thriller Film is a genre that revolves around anticipation and suspense. The aim for Thrillers is to keep the audience alert and on the edge of their seats. The protagonist in these films is set against a problem – an escape, a mission, or a mystery. No matter what sub-genre a Thriller film falls into, it will emphasize the danger that the protagonist faces. The tension with the main problem is built on throughout the film and leads to a highly stressful climax. TYPES OF THRILLER MOVIES: Action Thriller Take any other thriller subgenre, give it’s defining elements a back seat, and focus on the action, and you have an action-thriller. This is more common in movies than novels because of the visual appeal of explosions and violence. Conspiracy Thriller In this subgenre the protagonist must confront a large, powerful organization whose threat only he sees. Usually he must do so alone.
